તેં શું કર્યું?

દેશ તો આઝાદ થાતાં થઈ ગયો,
તેં શું કર્યું?
દેશ જો બરબાદ થાતાં રહી ગયો,
એ પુણ્ય આગળ આવીને કોનું રહ્યું?
‘લાંચ રુશ્વત, ઢીલ, સત્તાદોર, મામામાશીના,
કાળા બજારો, મોંઘવારી: ના સીમા!’
- રોષથી સૌ દોષ ગોખ્યા,
ગાળથી બીજાને પોંખ્યા.
આળ પોતાનેય શિર આવે ન, જો!  તેં શું કર્યું?
આપબળ ખર્ચ્યું પૂરણ?
જો, દેશના આ ભાગ્યમાં તેં શું ભર્યું?
સ્વાતંત્ર્યની કિંમત ચૂકવવી  હર પળે;
સ્વાતંત્ર્યના ગઢકાંગરા: કરવત ગળે.
ગાફેલ, થા હુંશિયાર!
તું દિનરાત નિજ સૌભાગ્યને શું નિંદશે?
શી સ્વર્ગદુર્લભ મૃતિકાનો પુણ્યમય તુજ પિંડ છે.
હર એક હિંદી હિંદ છે,
હર એક હિંદી હિંદની છે જિંદગી.
હો હિંદ સુરભિત ફુલ્લદલ અરવિંદ:
એ સ્વાતંત્ર્યદિનની બંદગી.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

The country has won the freedom any way 
But what have you done 
For the country by the way? 
 
If the country has not become 
Totally ruined so far
Whose noble deed for the country 
Has saved the day? 
 
Ya, corruption, delay, power-politics 
Nepotism, black market, flood of inflation 
Is there everywhere. 
 
And you have enumerated rightly 
The fault of others rather vehemently 
And cited them to all 
With gusto - irreverently 
 
But have you kept yourself away 
From being a part of that system? 
What have you done 
For the country by the way? 
 
Have you acted with full force? 
Spent all your might? 
For betterment of your country? 
 
One has to pay the price of freedom 
Every minute be sure 
Or else the freedom would vanish 
Without a trace any way. 
 
O negligent!  Be alert! 
For what you are bemoaning
Your fate needlessly? 
Be aware that you are made of  
Rare and resourceful material 
Not found even in the heaven! 
 
Each Indian is India itself. 
Each Indian makes the life of India. 
Let India be a lotus 
Fully blossomed and fragrant
That may be our prayer 
On every Independence Day.
